Mapping Flamenco is a school show captured in a video series. In this online arts integration program, students view episodes on thier own schedule, as many times as they wish. Students dance flamenco, create rhythms with hand clapping, and understand how ideas about history are reflected in movement and music. Downloadable activities reinforce curriculum standards for social studies, literacy, and more.
Let’s map flamenco through its influences and of Latin America.
Flamenco originated in southern Spain, called Andalucía, in the mid-1800s. At that time, much of what we now call Latin America was divided into colonies of Spain. Indigenous people, enslaved Africans, Creoles, and Europeans created music and dance in the New World, and the arts moved back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean via trade ships. Some of those cultural expressions influenced the formation of flamenco.
Explore the cultural expressions of Latin America that helped give flamenco its unique sound and look. See how ideas of one community in one place fused with others, and how they moved across the Atlantic Ocean.
